Save Space and Power Up Your Workouts with the PowerBlock Elite Adjustable Dumbbells

Years ago I decided I wanted to start working out. I had been an athlete, but life circumstances were such that it became difficult to find time for myself and my health struggled because of it.

When we make a decision like that, it is not easy to change your lifestyle. Should I spend time going to the gym? Should I work out from home? What can I afford to spend? How much time can I spare?

One fitness product answered many of these questions...The Bowflex SelectTech 552. This product was perfect because it gives you, essentially, any dumbbell in the weight room in one location with an easily adjustable weight load.

With the Bowflex SelectTech 552, there was no monthly membership, I could work out from home, and I could perform almost any exercise in my garage that I could in the gym.

While you still need motivation and drive to make your workouts happen, the Bowflex SelectTech 552 will give you every opportunity to make working out a reality.

About the Product

The Bowflex SelectTech is an adjustable dumbbell that gives you the flexibility to change the weight of the dumbbell from 5 pounds to 52.5 pounds at 5 or 2.5 pound intervals. That means it is ideal for people of all fitness levels and all strength levels. In fact, two people could work out together who are on completely different fitness levels and not miss a beat in their training.

While the adjustability is great and offers a wide range of weights, there are many people who lift heavier than the 52.5 pound upper limit of the SelectTech 552. For those worried about that, there are other products in the SelectTech line that may suit your needs better.

The Bowflex SelectTech is for anyone who is busy, cannot afford the time or money required by a gym membership, but who wants to lift weights as part of their exercise regimen. All you have to do is purchase the dumbbells, set them up in your home or garage, and then start working out with them immediately.

The SelecTech has a steel handle wrapped in rubber with adjustable weight plates which give you the feel of a regular dumbbell and a true weight. In fact, the rubber on the handle is thicker and offers a little comfort compared to a traditional dumbbell. Since you adjust both sides separately, you can also workout stabilizing muscles by making one side slightly heavier than the other.

The packaging and product are compact in shipping, but when you remove the product you find that it is a substantial size and the grip is similar to any other dumbbell. The rubber weights are a little bulky and they sometimes make it harder for a full range of motion on exercises such as the bench and shoulder press, but this is barely noticeable after time.

Bowflex offers other products that make the SelectTech even more capable of a great workout. Products such as a weight bench, a weight stand to keep the weights off of the floor, foam padding, and weight gloves are just some of the things that will make the SelectTech even more effective.

If you are intrigued but still concerned about what the SelectTech is like, the product comes with a 6 week money back guarantee if the results are not there and a 2 year parts and labor warranty if you are worried about quality.

With any product there will be pros and cons. Your job as the consumer is to decide which one has the greater impact on your purchase.

Pros

Adjustable to almost any fitness level.

  • Compact enough to fit in a home or garage gym.

Has the feel of a real, gym quality, dumbbell.

The weights, just like every other Bowflex product, are very high in quality and last a long time. I have had mine for 11 years now and they still work like they new.

It is a small investment for a lifetime of fitness.

You can perform almost any exercise that you can in the gym from your own home.

  • Bowflex offers many complimentary products that make this dumbbell set even more appealing.

There is a 2 year warranty on the product which gives peace of mind.

Cons

If you do lifts with weights greater than 52.5 pounds, which is a large percentage of active men, these weights will limit your workout.

To make them fully productive you need to purchase other products (ie. weight bench, a stand to hold your weight, padding, etc.)

With a square design, the kettle block shape doesn't rest securely on conventional dumbbell racks. However, there are racks for the PowerBlock shape, and you'll only need one rack.

Unlike other dumbbells, the weights are not meant to be dropped. This does not mean they are not high quality, but the nature of an adjustable component means you should refrain from dropping or throwing the weights.

Powerblock Elite Conclusion

4.5/5

Because of their flexibility, quality, and usefulness I would absolutely recommend this product to anyone who is planning on working out from home. In fact, I cannot think of a product I would recommend more strongly than the Bowflex SelectTech.

If you do not have the time, do not want to spend the money, or are intimidated by the gym experience, the Bowflex SelectTech is for you. It has revolutionized my workout and I believe it will do the same for yours.
